Is He Worth It?

Working at the rescue mission had become my life. I had fallen in love with helping others. I found a peace and joy that came from putting others before myself.
Day after day, I would laugh and joke with the guys while leading Bible studies and helping them find jobs. We even reached 100 percent employment at the shelter with over 40 to 50 men getting jobs. However, deep down, my heart was still longing for football.
One day, as I was sitting at the homeless shelter, a man approached me and said, "Do you want to play football again?"
I respond, "Of course, this is what I've loved and played my entire life, until now."
He says, "I’m going to help you get back into football. My son coaches for the Philadelphia Eagles."
After taking approximately three seconds to think about his offer, my mind was already set on ditching everything for the opportunity. In less than a month, I resigned from my job and moved to Florida, leaving everything behind to pursue this life changing opportunity. I knew for a fact that playing the sport I loved and earning millions of dollars was a good enough reason for me to leave everything.
No one questioned the decision because, like me, they thought that a potential NFL opportunity was worth giving up everything for. So, my intense training picked up again and it was time to devote every second to being the best football player I could be. There was no time for distractions, no time for hobbies, and I even distanced myself from family because I was so focused on the opportunity.
A lot of people say that the NFL stands for “not for long” because the average time playing in it is only three to four years. However, you will see millions of people risking everything in their lives for a sport that lasts no longer than 10 to 15 years, even if you are extremely good — 21 years max.
I’m sure nothing that I have said so far sounds irrational, but the thing that is irrational is that we understand someone dropping everything for an NFL opportunity, but we don’t understand dropping everything for Someone who created everyone. I was so focused that I quit my job because I didn't want anything to distract me from this potentially life altering opportunity. The people of the Bible had this same love, devotion and commitment to Jesus. And Jesus said that without it, you will never be His disciple.
”“If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life [in the sense of indifference to or relative disregard for them in comparison with his attitude toward God]—he cannot be My disciple.“ - Luke 14:26 AMP
How many of us are willing to uproot our lives at a moment's notice for a high paying job? We are willing to work from 9-5, cutting off all communication with family and friends for 8 hours a day, 50 years straight, just for our jobs. We are willing to work from 9-5, cutting off all communication with family and friends for 8 hours a day, 50 years straight, just for our jobs...
But where is this love and devotion when it comes to Christ, Himself? We find it in the Bible from the followers of Jesus Christ, who left everything at once for a potential relationship with Him.
”Going on from there, He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets. He called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.“ - Matthew 4:21-22 NKJV
However, in today's society, we are trapped in a system that sucks the spirit of Jesus out of us. We say that we love God, but then we spend a majority of our time doing things that please our boss instead of Him. We say we love God but constantly suppress that so called love for a man who happens to give us our paycheck.
What if it takes us leaving everything and consecrating ourselves with His Word to form a genuine relationship with God through Jesus?
Is He worth it?
Question of the day: You got the dream job, but it has kept you from gaining a relationship with God. Now you will burn in hell for all of eternity... Is it worth it?
